Free Space Optical (FSO)

June 28, 2011 -- SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BridgeWave Communications, the leading supplier of 4G millimeter wave backhaul solutions, today announced that Bloom Energy®, a Silicon Valley-based provider of breakthrough solid oxide fuel cell technology that produces clean, reliable, affordable onsite power, has installed several gigabit wireless links on its Sunnyvale, California campus. The ultra-high capacity GE60 links now bridge connectivity between five buildings on the Bloom Energy campus and have significantly improved network uptime and productivity.

“We are pleased that Bloom Energy has selected our solutions for their network. BridgeWave’s GE60 gigabit wireless links are designed to cost effectively extend corporate networks across campus or town without the hassle and expense of trenching or leasing fiber.”

Prior to installing the BridgeWave links, the free space optical solutions in place at Bloom Energy caused erratic network connectivity between buildings and were extremely sensitive to alignment issues, especially those caused by thermal differential expansion and compression. On average, the optical solutions would lose connectivity about once a week, disconnecting voice and email communication between buildings and causing extreme user and IT frustration.

“We needed to improve network connectivity and increase bandwidth, and determined that the existing optical solutions needed to be replaced,” said Chris Motta, director of IT at Bloom Energy. “We looked for a solution that was not affected by changes in the environment and offered long-term stability while improving throughput.”

Bloom Energy’s IT team evaluated a number of solutions to replace the existing infrastructure, including the possibility of installing fiber on the campus or contracting with a telecommunications provider to manage the network services. Both alternatives were dismissed, as trenching fiber lines was an extremely expensive labor- and time-intensive process, while the recurring leased fiber costs were prohibitively expensive to maintain. The BridgeWave links, installed by Pacific Communications, were up and running in one afternoon, and operate at a fraction of the cost.

“Because there’s no dark fiber on our campus, we would have had to take weeks to get permits to bore across the street to install a fiber-based solution and leasing from a telecommunications provider would have been very expensive on a monthly basis. BridgeWave offered the best price and performance based on capability and we are pleased with the overall robustness of the system,” said Motta.

The BridgeWave links are currently being used to support voice, file transfer, email and Internet access on Bloom Energy’s campus. Motta estimates the links will pay for themselves in just four months, relative to a telecommunications provider managed solution. The links have eliminated the weekly network outages, leading to an overall increase in IT staff productivity as fewer resources and less time are spent getting the network back up. More importantly, the BridgeWave links provide solid connectivity, allowing Bloom Energy staff to perform their functions without interruption.

“Just as Bloom Energy has developed elegant alternatives to providing affordable, clean power, BridgeWave’s solutions are cost-effective alternatives to expensive fiber lines,” said Amir Makleff, president and CEO of BridgeWave. “We are pleased that Bloom Energy has selected our solutions for their network. BridgeWave’s GE60 gigabit wireless links are designed to cost effectively extend corporate networks across campus or town without the hassle and expense of trenching or leasing fiber.”
