LEDs in Test/Measurement, Medical/Science Market Forecast

May 28, 2021 – ElectroniCast, a leading market/technology consultancy, today announced the release of an update and application expansion to their annual market study and forecast of the use of packaged light-emitting diodes (LEDs) used in test/measurement, medical, and other scientific devices.

According to the research study, the global consumption value of packaged LEDs in selected test/measurement, medical, and other science devices in 2020 was estimated at $514.4 million.  Due to the impact on production, sales, shipment, and implementation caused by the negative effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the consultants estimated a slowdown in 2020, and they are forecasting a continuation of consumption concerns in 2021.

Due to the lower base consumption value in 2020, due to the impact of COVID-19, the consultancy is forecasting an average annual growth rate of 12.2 percent during the 1st-half of the forecast period (2020 to 2025); reaching over $914 million in 2025. During the 2nd-half of the forecast (2025-2020), the value is forecast to increase at a slower rate, but advance in value to well over $1 billion in 2030 with quantity growth partially offset, by a decline of average selling prices (ASPs).

All values and prices in this report are at end-user levels and are in current dollars, which include the effect of a forecasted 5 percent annual inflation rate over the forecast period. Market forecast data in this study report refers to consumption (use) for a particular calendar year; therefore, this data is not cumulative data.

The market data of the consumption (use) of LEDs are also segmented by an extensive range of colors. According to the study, UV lamps are rapidly replacing mercury-based lamps in many applications. Red LEDs (including visible red, infrared/IR, and near-IR), in 2020, represented over 20 percent share of the worldwide marketplace.

The forecast by Sensing/Detection and Analytical/Monitoring applications, in 2020, representing over 30% of the worldwide consumption value of packaged LEDs in the selected test/measurement and medical/science devices; and the relative market share is forecast to increase further in value to over $400 million in 2030.

The consumption of LEDs in Phototherapy/Sanitation/Cell Regeneration/Curing application category, which includes horticulture, sterilization of surface areas, air, and water, medical, health & beauty Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), as well as selected medical device curing, and other uses, is forecast to increase to $670.8 million in 2030.  Overall LEDs used in Instrumentation Light Sources and Imaging devices was reportedly down in 2020, due to the economic impact of the coronavirus.

Fiber Optic Connector Market Forecast

May 9, 2021 -- ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market & technology forecast consultancy addressing the fiber optics communications industry, today announced the release of their market forecast and analysis of the use of fiber optic connectors and mechanical splices in communication applications.

10-Year Market Forecast - The global fiber optic connector and mechanical splice consumption value reached an estimated $4.18 billion in 2020. The consumption is forecast to increase with moderate to mature rising quantity growth slightly offset by declining average selling prices.  In the year 2025, the worldwide consumption value is forecast to reach $5.19 billion, and then forecasted to increase to nearly $5.59 billion in the year 2030.[1]  Note: Market forecast data in this study refers to consumption (use) for a particular calendar year; therefore, this data is not cumulative data.

Pushed by the use of multimode connectors in private data networks, the American region was the leader in global consumption value last year (2020); however, both the EMEA and the APAC regions are forecast to achieve faster annual growth versus the American region, during the next decade.

Because of the impact on production, supply, decreases in sales, slowdowns in marketing, shipment and implementation (and other) caused by the negative effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the consultancy estimated a slowdown in consumption in 2020; however, driven by the immediate need to expand bandwidth in multiple applications, they are forecasting an increasingly positive recovery.

Fiber optic connector use (value) in the Telecommunications application is forecast to increase at an annual growth rate of 6.6 percent (2020-2025), driven by access network fiber deployment (FTTx) and wireless/mobile backbone infrastructure, such as 5G; and then the annual growth rate is set to increase at a slower pace during the 2nd-half at the forecast period. Fiber-to-the x (FTTx) is a generic term for any broadband network architecture using optical fiber to provide all or part of the local loop used for last-mile telecommunications.

Fiber optic connector and mechanical splice units are also used in a variety of Military/ Aerospace applications requiring rigorous testing and harsh environment fiber optic certification to ensure reliability and performance in the field.  Fiber optic technology is used for a wide variety of air, sea, ground, and space applications.  Connectors with polarization keys and keyways must be manufactured to exacting tolerances to reduce radial misalignment and insertion loss. In addition to telecommunications, cable TV, and private data networks, fiber optic connectors are used in specialty industry applications, such as medical/science, automotive, oil/gas, underwater, industrial, sensors and other user-groups.

The global fiber optic connector consumption is driven by the continued increase in bandwidth demand beyond the limits of copper.  As optical fiber use migrates closer and closer to the end user, where cable lengths are shorter with higher fiber counts, the requirements for jointing fibers becomes more critical. Splicing and connecting, play a significant role in a network’s cost and performance.

There are over 120 vendors competing for the global fiber optic connector/mechanical splice market, which ElectroniCast tracks, using a product matrix showing vendor participation in several fiber optic interconnect product segments.
