USA – LED Flashlight Market Forecast

The consumption of new LED flashlights reached an estimated 126.6 million units in 2020

July 7, 2021 -- ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market and technology forecast firm covering photonic and electronic devices, today announced the findings of their market research study of the use of LED-based flashlights in the United States.

According to the study, the U.S. consumption value of LED-based Flashlights in 2020 was estimated at $487.5 million.  Due to the impact on production, sales, shipment, and implementation caused by the negative effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19), ElectroniCast estimated a continued slowdown in 2020 compared to the previous year, along with consumption value concerns this year (2021), since decreasing average selling prices are partially off-setting the increases in volume (quantity) of flashlight units.

This year (2021), the consultancy forecasts an increase in the consumption value of LED-based flashlights in the United States, after the challenges, caused by the pandemic; however, their forecast presents a relatively “flat” growth pattern in value throughout the decade due mostly by flat-to-decreases in average selling prices, which is due mostly to automated packaged LED manufacturing technology advancements and competitive pressures; the relatively large use of LED-based products had initially been due to the displacement of the various other/competing light source technology. However, according to ElectroniCast, Laser Excited Phosphor (LEP) flashlights are set to take some market share from LED-based flashlights, especially in higher-end rechargeable units.

The retail-specialty sales channel held a 57% relative market share of the United States’ consumption value in 2020 at nearly $280 million.  The retail-specialty sales channel is forecast to maintain the lead in relative market share throughout the next 10-years in terms of value; however, in terms of volume (quantity/units), the retail-general category will catch up to the retail-specialty sales channel towards the end of the forecast period, as general-type flashlights continue to incorporate increase capability at a lower average selling price.

Rechargeable versus Standard - The consumption value of flashlights in the United States (USA) was estimated at $487.5 million in 2020.  In terms of value, flashlights, which are sold and promoted to recharge the power source (batteries), are forecast to dominate the product mix; however, in terms of the volume (quantity/units), the Standard types of flashlights are forecast to maintain the market share lead. (The Standard-types of flashlights are priced considerably less than the Rechargeable-types).
