Fiber Optic Sensors Global Market Forecast

According to ElectroniCast, the combined use of Continuous Distributed and Point fiber optics sensors are forecast to reach $4.49 Billion in 2020…

Aptos, CA (USA) – 2016  -- ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market/technology forecast consultancy, today announced the release of their market forecast and analysis of the global consumption selected Fiber Optic Point Sensors and Continuous Distributed Fiber Optics Sensor systems.

According to the market forecast study, the combined use of Continuous Distributed and Point fiber optics sensors reached $2.79 Billion in 2015. During the 2015-2020 timeline, the value is forecast to increase grow at an average annual rate of 10 percent, reaching $4.49 billion.  Market forecast data in this study report refers to consumption (use) for a particular calendar year; therefore, this data is not cumulative data.

Continuous Distributed fiber optic sensor systems involve the optic fiber with the sensors embedded with the fiber.  ElectroniCast counts each Point fiber optic sensor as one unit; however, the volume of Distributed Continuous fiber optic sensors is based on a complete optical fiber line and associated other components, which are defined as a system.

“Since a distributed continuous optical fiber line (system) may have 100s of sensing elements in a continuous-line, it is important to note that ElectroniCast counts all of those sensing elements in a distributed continuous system as one (system) unit – only.  In the case of some applications, the price of the system may be several thousand dollars,” stated Stephen Montgomery, Director of the Fiber Optics Components group at ElectroniCast Consultants.

“POINT sensors are often used in Distributed fiber optic sensor systems (installed at multiple-points/ point-to-point); however, we count their use in the Point fiber optic sensor category and not in the continuous (non-stop) distributed sensor category,” Montgomery added.

Planar Lightwave Circuit Splitters Market Forecast

The use of PLC splitters increase 14% in the year 2015…

Aptos, CA (USA) – 2016  -- ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market/technology consultancy, today announced the report release of their market forecast of the global consumption of Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) splitters used in Fiber Optic Communication Networks.

According to the ElectroniCast market report, the worldwide consumption value of PLC splitters reached $696 million in 2015, up 14% from 2014.  PLC splitters will continue to contribute an important role in Fiber to the Home (FTTH) networks by allowing a single passive optical network (PON) interface to be shared among many subscribers. PLC splitters distribute optical signals from an input optical fiber port to multiple optical fibers output port.

“There are several piece-parts that are needed to produce a typical PLC splitter, such as 1-2 input optical fibers with an input fiber containment unit, a planar (splitter) chip, a fiber array containment unit, and several output optical fibers, as well as the housing/exterior package,” said Stephen Montgomery, Director of the Fiber Optics Group at ElectroniCast Consultants.

In addition to covering the market for the PLC splitters, this study also quantifies the use of the PLC chips and the modules that PLC splitters may eventually end-up in.

The global PLC splitter chip consumption value in 2015 was $123.5 million.  The global consumption of PLC chips used in PLC splitters is forecast to expand at an average annual growth rate of 1.92 percent in value, reaching $135.8 million in the year 2020 (peaking in value in 2018).  The Asia Pacific region (APAC) led in the use of PLC chips in 2015.

“PLC splitters are available in several configurations; the ElectroniCast study provides market data on 11-separate configuration for the years 2015-2020.  The 1x4 split configuration dominated the market in 2015; however, the higher split-ratios, such as the 1x16, 1x32, 2x16, and 2x32 are forecast with much faster annual growth,” Montgomery added.

Optical Isolators Global Market Trends

Optical Isolators Global Market Trends

According to ElectroniCast, the worldwide use of optical isolators in Telecommunication applications reached $517.2 million in 2015….

Aptos, California (USA) – 2016  -- ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market research & technology forecast consultancy addressing the fiber optics communications industry, today announced the release of a new market forecast of the global consumption of optical isolators in optical communication and specialty applications.

According to the extensive market study, the worldwide optical isolator consumption value was led by Telecommunication applications in 2015 with 74.1 percent share or $517.2 million, increasing at an annual pace of 5 percent to $660 million in 2020 (peaking in value in 2019). Optical isolators are not widely used in Private Enterprise applications; however, annual use of fiber optic isolators in Cable TV controlled device deployments are forecast to increase slightly in value, mainly driven by FTTH multi-media applications.

Optical isolator units are used in a variety of Military/Aerospace applications requiring rigorous testing and harsh environment fiber optic (HEFO) certification to ensure reliability and performance.  Laser-based fiber optic technology, incorporating optical isolators, is used in a wide variety of air, sea, ground, and space applications, especially in high vibration and rough handling situations.

A major user-group within the Specialty application category is Laboratory/R&D and industrial.  Device-type optical isolators are used with laser diodes, fiber lasers, solid-state lasers, and Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs), which are semiconductor lasers that emit in the mid- to far-infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The optical isolators used in Specialty applications are often high-powered (>300 mW) device-type, instead of component-type; therefore, these isolators have an enormous price premium versus lower-power isolators.

Often these high-powered isolators are used for noise reduction, medical imaging, pulse selection for mode locked lasers, sensing, regeneration switches, disc master, optical trapping, phase shifters, frequency modulation spectroscopy and general shuttering. The optical isolators are also used in these and other specialty applications, such as sensing for industrial, structures and other many other communication product-oriented manufacturing/test/R&D uses.

Harsh Environment Fiber Optic (HEFO) Market Forecast

According to ElectroniCast Consultants, the worldwide use of fiber optic components used in harsh environments reached $1.3 billion in 2015…

According to the ElectroniCast study, the value of passive optical components, led by fiber optic cable assemblies (glass optical fiber/GOF plus plastic optical fiber/POF), in harsh environments reached $711 million in 2015.  Transmitter/receiver units, held a 43% percent share of total components consumption in 2015.  The total use of fiber optic components used in all harsh environment applications is forecast to increase at an average annual growth rate of 14.6 % from $1.3 billion in 2015 to $2.6 billion in 2020. Market forecast data in this study report refers to consumption (use) for a particular calendar year; therefore, this data is not cumulative data.

“Historically, the market value of harsh environment fiber optic components and devices has been dominated by military/aerospace-qualified components, with a 68% share in back in 2010; however we forecast that the military/aerospace application’s market share will decrease over the forecast period (2015-2020),” said Stephen Montgomery, Director of the Fiber Optics group at ElectroniCast.  “The commercial/industrial fiber optic component consumption, in turn, is dominated by plastic optical fiber (POF) link components; however, glass-based optical fiber is finding an increase in opportunity in commercial/industrial applications,” Montgomery added.

Harsh Environment (HE) is defined, by ElectroniCast, as environment beyond the limits normally encountered by commercial telecom, datacom and commercial intra-equipment fiber data links; extremes of:
-            Temperature; above or below (-40 to +75) degrees C
-           Shock and vibration; External pressure extremes
-            Tensile strength of fiber
-           High EMI/RFI interference
-            Corrosive and/or solvent surroundings, Atomic and other Radiation

ElectroniCast members who participated in this report were qualified.

Bottom-up Methodology     ElectroniCast forecasts are developed initially at the lowest detail level, and then summed to successively higher levels. The background market research focuses on the amount of each type of product used in each application in the base year (last year: 2015), and the prices paid at the first transaction from the manufacturer. This forms the base year data. ElectroniCast analysts then forecast the growth rates in component quantity use in each application, along with price trends, based on competitive, economic and technology forecast trends, and apply these to derive long term forecasts at the lowest application levels. The usage growth rate forecasts depend heavily on analysis of overall end user trends toward optical communication equipment usage and economic payback.

Cross-Correlation Increases Accuracy      The quantities of fiber optic fusion splice devices/equipment, fiber cable, connectors, transceivers, transport terminals, optical add/drop MUX, photonic switches and other products used in a particular application are interrelated. Since ElectroniCast conducts annual analysis and forecast updates in each fiber optic related product field, accurate current quantity estimates in each application are part of this corporate database. These quantities are cross-correlated as a “sanity check.”

ElectroniCast, each year since 1985, has conducted extensive research and updated our multiple-client forecasts of each fiber optic component category. As technology and applications have advanced, the number of component subsets covered by the forecasts has expanded impressively.
