Fujitsu - Photonics Research and Development

RICHARDSON, Texas--()--Fujitsu, a leading provider of business, information technology, and communications solutions, announced today that the company’s continuous technology advancements - aimed at helping customers achieve their business objectives - was recognized by the US Patent and Trademark Office with 77 patent grants in 2011. The 77 patents earned most recently by Fujitsu Network Communications is 35 more than the company receiving the second-most, and counting since 2006, gives Fujitsu 140 more than any other optical technology provider.
“At Fujitsu there is no such thing as resting on your laurels”
Among Fujitsu’s technology research and development activity recognized for furthering the state of optical communications is the company’s work in Next Generation Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM), 400G transport and OTN switching. Each year, Fujitsu invests more than $2.8 billion in R&D, which allows it to provide North America’s most prominent Telecom carriers, Multiple System Operators (MSOs) and a myriad of private and public-sector enterprises with technology that offers the high-bandwidths, low-latencies, uninterrupted availability and security they require.

“Fujitsu’s technology has been chosen by the largest communications operators in North America so it’s not surprising to see them being at the forefront of innovation,” said Ron Kline, principal analyst, Network Infrastructure Telecoms, Ovum. “The company’s substantial R&D investments are helping to move the communications industry toward the next generation in networking where multiple transport standards, protocols and transmission speeds coexist on a single, unified infrastructure. I applaud Fujitsu’s commitment to innovation and congratulate the company on its track-record in leading the industry in patent grants.”
That technology leadership is fueling the company’s growing optical network market share in North America. According to Ovum, as of Q4 2011, Fujitsu Network Communications owned 22 percent of the total optical transport and switching market, a greater percentage than any other single provider.

“At Fujitsu there is no such thing as resting on your laurels,” said Rod Naphan, senior vice president of product and strategic planning at Fujitsu Network Communications. “Communications professionals across North America have come to rely on us for the kinds of solutions that facilitate their move toward next generation networking in a way that minimizes CAPEX and OPEX without sacrificing capabilities. Today, Fujitsu technology is enabling some of the most advanced networks implemented, providing a converged packet optical infrastructure where profitable Ethernet services may be delivered over any access media.”
