Open Access Fiber Backbone in Nigeria

AFL, a leading global manufacturer of fibre optic cable to the electric utility market, is close to completing its supply of fibre optic cable and equipment to Nigeria's first open access fibre optic backbone network. Dangote Industries is the network owner and Dancom Technologies is the network operator. The project connects directly with Phase3 Telecom, a provider of carrier services.

Boye Olusanya, managing director of Dancom Technologies, visited AFL's headquarters located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and toured the manufacturing facilities. Olusanya was presented with a crystal commemorative award highlighting our business partnership with Dancom Technologies.

"AFL is pleased with the progress of the Dancom fiber project so far, and we are even more proud of the impact Dancom is making on the Nigerian telecommunications market with their swift installation of SkyWrap," said Steven Maederer, Commercial Director at AFL in Swindon, U.K.

The Dancom network construction project started in 2010 and includes 14,000 km of a fibre optic network linked through regional network owners for Nigeria's National Broadband Carrier Network project. This project has enabled advanced communications throughout the country. Over 750 km were installed in 2010 with another 665 km in 2011 and over 750 km is being planned for 2012.

The installation uses AFL's SkyWrap® solution, a fibre optic cable that is helically applied on existing ground or phase conductors using specially designed installation equipment. This solution allows for quick deployment with minimal disruption to existing power services over harsh terrain.
