Wright University team to present fiber-optic surgical tool to investors

Researchers from Wright State University have been invited to present their business model for new medical technology that would eliminate the need for X-ray imaging in certain procedures.

The Wright State team recently presented their concept to top angel investors, entrepreneurial providers and university leaders at the 2016 Ohio Collegiate Venture Showcase.

“This is a big deal,” Caroline Cao, a professor of engineering at the College of Engineering and Computer Science, said. “Ultimately, I’m hoping for investors to invest but also for feedback and connections to resources that will help us develop and commercialize this device,” said Cao, who also is a professor of surgery at the Boonshoft School of Medicine.

The device is comprised of a small optical fiber that could be inserted into a patient undergoing endovascular procedures, enabling physicians to track surgical tools in real-time without the use of X-ray imaging.

“This would speed up the procedures and reduce the radiation exposure from X-rays for both the patients and the physicians,” Cao said. “We have proof of concept. We are now at the stage where we need to build a prototype. There is still going to be a period of development.”
